A letter to my 3 year old Dinosaur...I mean...Son

Dear Preston

Oh Bubs, where has the time gone? It feels like you just turned 2 and now here we are celebrating your 3rd birthday.  This past year you have fully embraced your toddler status yet little by little starting morphing into a little boy.  You have so much to say these days whether it is telling us all about what you did at school each day, asking questions or making observations as we are driving in the car.  You have continued to embody all things boy with your love of diggers, dinosaurs and danger.  As the only boy among all the girls in the family, it would be easy to say that you are all rough and tough.  While that is true 99% of the time, you still love are a little lover and give great hugs and juicy kisses.  It melts my heart every night when you ask me to sing you “Sunshine” and then tell me, “I wove you, Mommy,” as I kiss your good night.
I was warned by my fellow boy moms that you would be develop a strong interest in construction equipment somewhere between 2 and 3.  Lucky for you, there is always a construction site nearby whether it is on the route school or in the neighborhood.  You love to point out all of the construction equipment and tell me which diggers are “sweeping” (aka sleeping) or not doing any work.  My favorite line to hear you say is, “what that digger doing?” or “what that worker doing” when we drive past a construction site.  While diggers are your favorite, you love to point out other big vehicles like school buses, fire engines, ambulances, and garbage trucks.  No matter which one you see, you always say, “Wook it, Mommy!” and quickly ask, “Where they going?” As I said, you are full of questions and wonder.  As exhausting as it can be sometimes, I love getting a glimpse into how your little mind works.
When I think about your love of dinosaurs, I realize that it is more like an obsession.  A healthy obsession but definitely an obsession.  As you have started to talk more, that obsession has gotten stronger and stronger as you ask questions about dinosaurs and learn the different types.  It is funny every time that you roar like a dinosaur.  You really think that you are as scary as a T-Rex.  When I was planning your birthday celebration, I knew that a dinosaur theme  was definitely the way to go.
From the day you first met Eloise, she has been the light of your life.  I love that you look forward to seeing her every morning and insist on saying goodnight to her every night.  For the most part, you guys get along pretty well.  Of course, you have your moments where you are still the annoying little brother stealing her Barbies or knocking over her doll with a big truck or pretending that your dinosaur is eating her shopkins.  One of my favorite things to do is watch you two play “Baby.”  You love to let Eloise mother you and pretend to treat you like her baby.  It is super funny to hear you fake cry and Eloise rush to you and say, “Baby! Mommy is here.” These moments can be short-lived but they are still fun to watch.  Last year around this time, you were calling Eloise, “Sheesh” and we loved it.  Because you are a big boy now, you call her Eloisey.  Trust me, just as cute.  You used to have to try so hard to keep up with her but I’m pretty sure you can run faster that her on most days.

About a year ago, the sleep struggle started. First, you started climbing out of your crib. Solution: toddler bed. Second, you started getting out of your toddler bed and coming into our room. Solution: big boy bed. Third, you won’t stay in your big boy bed for more than a couple of hours each night. Solution: snuggle with a little maniac whenever he makes his way in and pray tomorrow night will be better.  See, when you were still in my belly, I bought this cute little wooden sign that said, “You are my favorite reason to lose sleep.” Well, crap - wish granted. Joke is on me for buying a cute sign like that!  We will figure this out eventually.
Your Daddy & I joke more often than we should that your saving grace is how cute you are.  If I could find one, I would get you a shirt that says, “Straight Outta Timeout.”  You test our patience and all the limits with a cute little smirk on your face.  You are a fearless thrill seeker or what some may call a “no limit soldier.”  The world is your obstacle course.  Or on most days, the couch is your trampoline.  Every day that we avoid the ER is a good day!  Last summer you coined the phrase, “3-2-1” as code for wanting to jump in the pool.  By the end of the summer, you were basically jumping in somewhere between 3 and 2.  I can only imagine what this summer will hold for us! Your first day of swim lessons 2 weeks ago, you teacher said, “I never had a kid be so fearless on day 1.”  I just smiled and said, “Yep, that’s Preston!”
Over the past month, you have started repeating back to me one of the things I said to you while you were potty training – “You are the biggest boy ever!”  You really have become the biggest boy ever.  I’m so proud of you for being potty trained by your 3rdbirthday.  Cue the bonfire for the burning of all the diaper things – changing table, diaper cream, diaper bag, diaper genie, diaper caddy etc! In the next few months, you will be staring Preschool.  I can’t believe it but I am so excited for you.
Happy 3rd Birthday to my dinosaur roaring, macky-cheese loving, daring boy.  You are loved for the boy you are, the man you’ll become, and the son you’ll always be.

Love,

Mommy

Eloise is 4 & Fabulous

Dear Eloise,

How is it that another year has passed and you are 4 years old!  It was only fitting that we celebrated your 4th Birthday on the Disney Cruise and you were made into a real Princess to celebrate.  Everything about that experience captures the best parts of you - your wonderful imagination, love for all things girly, and a flare for drama!  This past year, you've turned into this tall, strong, bruise-shinned, beautiful, articulate little lady.  There is not a day that goes by that you say or do something, I just shake my head and smile and think, "who is this kid?"  How did I get so lucky to end up with a little girl like you?  You love so hard and have such excitement for life that you inspire every day to be a better mommy for you.

One of the best things is about you is how much you love everyone in your life.  I will never tire of the random times throughout the day that you will say, "Mommy?.....I love you."  Sometimes there is quite the dramatic pause in there after you say my name and I wonder, "Oh, God, what is she going to ask me."  9 times out of 10, you simply say, "I love you."  It's so precious.  I don't know remember when you started doing it but I will surely miss it if you ever stop.  I know first hand how frustrating it can be at times to have a younger sibling that gets into all of your stuff.  So, thank you for being kind to Preston.  He loves you so and just wants to be like you.  Thank you for singing to him when he cries in the car and making goofy noises to make him laugh.  Thank you letting him mess up your books and toys in your room so that he will keep busy while I do your hair in the morning.  Thank you for reading to him in his room while I put laundry away and get the bath ready.  Thank you for loving him so much that you have to give him a hug & kiss every day when we drop him off at school.  Thank you for being a mama's helper every day.  I don't know how I would do it without you.

I think I had it said it before but in some ways every day with you is like playing a game. Your love for a little fun or a little drama has led us to create a lot of fun games or routines around every day activities.  For example, when it is time for dinner, we have to say something about you to get you to come sit down.  We say, "if you have yellow hair, come & eat!"  You promptly say, "Oh! That's me...that's me!" and run to the table.  Your favorite thing is if Daddy pretends that I'm talking about him and you two race to the table.  Preston has now caught on too and likes to play along.  Every once in a while, we switch up and say something like, "if you have pink soccer shoes, come & eat!" or "if you are going on the Disney Cruise, come & eat!"  See, a never ending game!  The only reason why it is so fun to do this is because you have such a great imagination and playful heart.  It blows us away with the stories you come up with when you are playing.  All of your teachers have said the same thing as well.  I've often said that I should record some of your playtime stories and turn it into a book.  It would probably be a best seller!  The only thing that I can hold a candle to your imagination is your memory.  I swear, you never forget anything! It blows my mind how you can recall things with such detail that happened when you were 2.5 years old or that only happened one time and seemed so insignificant.  You know the route to school, which is impressive for a 25+ mile trip.  If I take a slightly different route or make a stop somewhere, you immediately notice it and comment on it.
This past year you have really displayed your independence.  You often ask if you can unbuckle yourself...brush your own hair...get your snack or water etc. Just last week, you started trying to completely dress yourself for school.  That's no easy task to take off the nightgown and put on a whole other outfit.  I'm impressed!  I thought you putting on your own shoes & socks was great but this is going to be awesome.  We figured early on that you had your own fashion sense and opinions about what you were wearing.  For easily a year or so, you pick out your clothes for the next day right before you go to bed.  It has made mornings so much easier.  Of course, the outfit of choice remains to be dresses.  No complaints here!  You look adorable in dresses with leggings or just by themselves in the summer.  The struggle now is shoe choice.  If it was up to you, you would wear fancy shoes or party shoes every day.  As much as I agree that your cute shoes complete the outfit, the amount of time you spend running on the playground requires a gym shoe.  At least we know better and buy the hot pink Nikes.
Now that you are 4, you are moving up to the Pre-K class.  You absolutely love school and all that structure and fun that goes along with it.  In some ways, you remind me so much of myself with this.  I always loved going to school and learning new things.  My parents have told me stories of how many questions I would ask, especially the "what if" questions.  Well, karma is a real thing because you are full of questions for me!  You often start your questions with, "Mommy, what happens if..."  Sometimes, I literally have no answer for you and yet telling you I don't know is not acceptable.  One question often leads to another question that almost always harder than the first.  Brad and I joke how challenging it is to watch a movie with you because you ask so many questions!  Sometimes an entire conversation will center on going down the list of everyone we know and asking what they are allergic to.  I have no idea where this weird obsession came from though.  You get weirdly excited when someone is actually allergic to something and I'm pretty sure you make a mental note of it.  For example, you &  Daddy went to the pet store and there were kittens.  You adored them and asked Brad if we could have one.  I'm allergic to them to the answer was, "No, Mommy is allergic to them."  Now every time we drive past that pet store you tell me that I can't go there because there are cats and I'm allergic.  A few weeks ago when we were headed to get her hair cut, you excitedly told me that you couldn't wait to ask Carla (the hairstylist) what she was allergic to.  Lord.  Future nurse or doctor in the making?  Over the past few weeks, the following topics have come up:

Where do babies come from?
How do babies get in their mommy's tummies?
Did you eat me & Preston?
Where was I when you & Daddy were kids and in school?

Death.
What happens to your body when you die?
Why did you get put in the ground?
When do you become alive again?
Why do people bring flowers when people die?

As hard as some of these questions are, I'm glad you are asking us.  It makes me realize how smart you are and observant to the world around you.  You make me so proud every day to see how smart you are and thirsty for knowledge.  I hope you are always this excited for learning new things.

My Favorite Conversations with Eloise

I asked Eloise to pick up a diaper that had fallen out of the diaper bag. She looks at me with a straight face and says in calm yet slightly irritated voice,

"Do I look like a mommy? Do I have hair like a mommy? Eyes like a mommy? Those glasses like a mommy?"
I had no words.  I picked up the diaper.

Eloise was wearing her Elsa crown in the way home from school...
M: "Do you want your snack?"
E: "No. Queens don't eat snacks."
M: "Do you want your water?"
E: "No. Queens do not drink water."
M: "What do Queens do?"
E: "Queens sit on their thrones. They also turn people into frogs."
10 minutes later, she asked for the snack & water.

Eloise had on some makeup on for her ballet recital...
E: "Mommy, are my teachers going to know who I am? They might think I'm a mommy because of my makeup. "

E: "Mommy! The rain is going to ruin my makeup!"

That moment when you know your kid uses too much technology...
"Alexa! Put on, Can't Feel my Face on YouTube."
"Alexa! Put on Justin Beaver (aka Beiber)!"

Your personality is so dynamic these days.  You are bossy yet sweet, loving and gentle, sensitive and curious.  Happy 4th Birthday to the most amazing little girl that I will ever know.

Love,

Mommy

Eloise's Birthday Shoot

One of my favorite things to do leading up to my kids' birthdays is to do a mini photo shoot.  I love coming up with a good theme but this year I let Eloise pick out a headband at the store and a dress from her closet for her shoot.  Her selections turned her into a beautiful garden fairy.
 Love this beautiful girl!

Eloise the Ballerina

Our little prima ballerina Eloise started doing ballet classes last year in the late Winter/early Spring.  Of course, she loved the outfits and quickly perfected her leaps and twirls.  Last weekend was the culmination of her "training," as she had her 1st Ballet Recital.  She was all decked out in her costume, ballerina bun hairstyle and some special makeup.  I had tons of fun being her personal glam squad by doing her hair and makeup.  She loved every minute of it!
When I was putting the makeup on, she said to me "Will my friends recognize me?  They might think I'm a Mommy because I've got your makeup on."  She was so worried about her makeup that she had a mini meltdown with fake tears about the rain ruining her makeup.  Lord help me when she is a teenager!

Who knows if Eloise will continue her ballet "career" in the coming years but at least I can say that I was able to have my moment as a Dance Mom or a Stage Mom.  I was armed with extra bobby pins and hairspray while we waited back stage for her number.  That moment that I left her with her classmates and teacher to go take my seat in the auditorium made me a little emotional.  I'm that Mom who gets teary-eyed at the drop of a hat.  Don't worry - I pulled it together by the time I got to my seat.
The Dance Studio will not let parents record of photograph the actual recital so the best thing we have is a video that Grandma Sandy took at the Rehearsal. The actual performance was just as "entertaining" as the rehearsal.

Following her performance, Daddy was armed with a dozen red roses for his princess.  While we were waiting for him to pull the car around, she was semi-struggling to the hold the bouquet and said, "Why did Daddy get me such big flowers?  I can't ever hold them!"

We are so proud of Eloise for performing in the Recital.  It was 2 shows in 2 days.  Many kids did not show for the 2nd show so I appreciate that she was willing and able to follow through on this commitment.  It's been fun watching her progress over the past year or so and we can't wait to see what she does next.

Summer So Far

The Littlest Kalins kids have been busy so far this summer!  Lots of fun with friends and family and making memories.  Here are some of the highlights:

 Eloise attended a Pretty Princess Tea Party with her fellow princess fanatics Grace & Camille Archer.  The girls had a blast and were smitten with all the princesses!

A few years ago, we started the tradition of taking pictures of the kids for Father's Day for all the Dads and Grandpas in the family.  This year may have been the best one yet!
No worries! We got some cute ones too.
Daddy got a new zero-turn radiance riding mower this Summer which I guess is super cool.  Eloise thinks it is awesome and loves "driving" it.

 When the weather cooperates, we have been taking walks around our neighborhood to get some fresh air before bath time & bed time.  It took a few walks for us to appreciate how Eloise is observing the world flower by flower, bird by bird, rock by rock etc.  Sometimes the walk takes a little longer than planned but she literally is stopping to smell the roses along the way and who are we to stop her.  Eloise is so much fun right now as she says the funniest things and is regularly singing or making up her own songs.  When she picked up this leaf on one of our walks, she said to us, "I love this leaf.  I'm going to keep it forever.  I'm going to take a bath with it and I'm going to sleep with it."  She dropped it like 3 minutes later.
 Water table = Endless hours of fun for kids of all ages.
Great Grandma Fitz loves watching these sweeties play together.  No amount of crying or fussing phases this ultimate mom.  I love getting advice from her or just validation that I'm doing okay as a mom.

Preston loves being surrounded by all his girl cousins.  He is pretty captivated by Brooke and can be quite sweet with her.
Hi! My name is Preston and I'm a real stinker.  I demand tons of food and then love throwing it on the ground.
Only a photographer's child has proper camera hold technique at 14 months old.  He even says his own version of "Cheese!"
Eloise is just few weeks away from her 1st Ballet recital.  This is from last weekend when they were practicing their group bow at the end.  God Bless Ms. Ellen for her patience with these girls.  It's going to be a memorable 2 minutes, folks!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Happy 14 months Preston Bradley!!
Well, here we are another month past and Preston is 14 months old!  He is over 25 lbs and turning more into a rambunctious little boy every day.  He is currently cutting his back molars along with a bunch of other teeth.  Poor little guy.  He's a bruiser and a tough guy so he's pushing through it.
So, what is Preston up to? He's become more vocal everyday and more agile & coordinated. He can climb up & down on all the furniture with no problem. He tries to sing the "E-I-E-I-O" in Old MacDonald when you sing it to him. Precious.  He yells "Hi!" when I answer my phone in the car. Similarly, he says BYE to everyone when we are leaving school and waves like a politician to the whole playground. It's hilarious when he yells, "MMMAAA!" to get my attention. Most of this happens when he is waiting for food in the highchair. Haha! To be honest, it reminds of the scene in Wedding Crashers when Will Ferrell yells to mother about bringing food for him and his friends..."MAAA!  The meatloaf!"
He is a water baby! Loves to put his face in water - bathtub, water table & pool. He thinks it's so funny. This is refreshing because Eloise is very timid around water - especially in her face.  Unfortunately, we've entered the era of toddler temper tantrums. He can't say much so he just screams and waves his little hands & arms.
My favorite party trick with him right now is, "Where's your belly?" He lifts up his shirt and pats that big ole belly with the biggest smile on his face. I die.
Lots more summer fun still to be had.  Stay tuned!
