A letter to my 3 year old Dinosaur...I mean...Son

Dear Preston

Oh Bubs, where has the time gone? It feels like you just turned 2 and now here we are celebrating your 3rd birthday.  This past year you have fully embraced your toddler status yet little by little starting morphing into a little boy.  You have so much to say these days whether it is telling us all about what you did at school each day, asking questions or making observations as we are driving in the car.  You have continued to embody all things boy with your love of diggers, dinosaurs and danger.  As the only boy among all the girls in the family, it would be easy to say that you are all rough and tough.  While that is true 99% of the time, you still love are a little lover and give great hugs and juicy kisses.  It melts my heart every night when you ask me to sing you “Sunshine” and then tell me, “I wove you, Mommy,” as I kiss your good night.
I was warned by my fellow boy moms that you would be develop a strong interest in construction equipment somewhere between 2 and 3.  Lucky for you, there is always a construction site nearby whether it is on the route school or in the neighborhood.  You love to point out all of the construction equipment and tell me which diggers are “sweeping” (aka sleeping) or not doing any work.  My favorite line to hear you say is, “what that digger doing?” or “what that worker doing” when we drive past a construction site.  While diggers are your favorite, you love to point out other big vehicles like school buses, fire engines, ambulances, and garbage trucks.  No matter which one you see, you always say, “Wook it, Mommy!” and quickly ask, “Where they going?” As I said, you are full of questions and wonder.  As exhausting as it can be sometimes, I love getting a glimpse into how your little mind works.
When I think about your love of dinosaurs, I realize that it is more like an obsession.  A healthy obsession but definitely an obsession.  As you have started to talk more, that obsession has gotten stronger and stronger as you ask questions about dinosaurs and learn the different types.  It is funny every time that you roar like a dinosaur.  You really think that you are as scary as a T-Rex.  When I was planning your birthday celebration, I knew that a dinosaur theme  was definitely the way to go.
From the day you first met Eloise, she has been the light of your life.  I love that you look forward to seeing her every morning and insist on saying goodnight to her every night.  For the most part, you guys get along pretty well.  Of course, you have your moments where you are still the annoying little brother stealing her Barbies or knocking over her doll with a big truck or pretending that your dinosaur is eating her shopkins.  One of my favorite things to do is watch you two play “Baby.”  You love to let Eloise mother you and pretend to treat you like her baby.  It is super funny to hear you fake cry and Eloise rush to you and say, “Baby! Mommy is here.” These moments can be short-lived but they are still fun to watch.  Last year around this time, you were calling Eloise, “Sheesh” and we loved it.  Because you are a big boy now, you call her Eloisey.  Trust me, just as cute.  You used to have to try so hard to keep up with her but I’m pretty sure you can run faster that her on most days.

About a year ago, the sleep struggle started. First, you started climbing out of your crib. Solution: toddler bed. Second, you started getting out of your toddler bed and coming into our room. Solution: big boy bed. Third, you won’t stay in your big boy bed for more than a couple of hours each night. Solution: snuggle with a little maniac whenever he makes his way in and pray tomorrow night will be better.  See, when you were still in my belly, I bought this cute little wooden sign that said, “You are my favorite reason to lose sleep.” Well, crap - wish granted. Joke is on me for buying a cute sign like that!  We will figure this out eventually.
Your Daddy & I joke more often than we should that your saving grace is how cute you are.  If I could find one, I would get you a shirt that says, “Straight Outta Timeout.”  You test our patience and all the limits with a cute little smirk on your face.  You are a fearless thrill seeker or what some may call a “no limit soldier.”  The world is your obstacle course.  Or on most days, the couch is your trampoline.  Every day that we avoid the ER is a good day!  Last summer you coined the phrase, “3-2-1” as code for wanting to jump in the pool.  By the end of the summer, you were basically jumping in somewhere between 3 and 2.  I can only imagine what this summer will hold for us! Your first day of swim lessons 2 weeks ago, you teacher said, “I never had a kid be so fearless on day 1.”  I just smiled and said, “Yep, that’s Preston!”
Over the past month, you have started repeating back to me one of the things I said to you while you were potty training – “You are the biggest boy ever!”  You really have become the biggest boy ever.  I’m so proud of you for being potty trained by your 3rdbirthday.  Cue the bonfire for the burning of all the diaper things – changing table, diaper cream, diaper bag, diaper genie, diaper caddy etc! In the next few months, you will be staring Preschool.  I can’t believe it but I am so excited for you.
Happy 3rd Birthday to my dinosaur roaring, macky-cheese loving, daring boy.  You are loved for the boy you are, the man you’ll become, and the son you’ll always be.

Love,

Mommy

A letter to my 5 year old

Dear Eloise,

In August 2010, I walked down to Hines Child Care Center with my BFF, $10 for the wait list fee in hand & a prayer in my heart that I'd be pregnant sooner than later.  Fast forward 2 years later, we welcomed you, Eloise Joy Kalins, on August 31, 2012.  Now 5 years later in late August 2017, you have said goodbye to the only school/daycare that you've known since 13 weeks old and embarked on new journey at St Mike's where you are celebrating your 5th birthday with a new teacher and classroom of new friends.
Eloise, you are absolutely the coolest & smartest person that I know.  Every day you amaze me with the things that you know, the topics that you have questions about and the crazy stories you tell. Your imagination is only matched by your flare for drama or your stubbornness.  God help us when you are a teenager! I hear this about 25 times a day unless it's the weekend and then it's more like 100..."Mommy? Can I tell you something?"  We never know what you will say or ask but most of the time, it's something super random. Some of the questions you asks absolutely stump us. When it comes to answering you, there's no tricking you or telling you some phoney-bologna. This year, we have tackled hard topics like cancer/illness, death & dying, God/Heaven/religion and making new friends.  I pray that you will always have this sense of wonder and curiosity.

Your fashion sense is remarkable.  Girl knows how to mix patterns & accessorize! Headbands all day, Everyday.  It's great that you dress yourself every day and do not want feedback or assistance. There hasn't been a cat-themed shirt that we have seen that has not made it into your closet.  Somehow you have found a way to wear your cat ears headband to school and everyday functions and look fabulous. Kudos to you my love.  Even on a hot summer day, you love a layered look.  And who could blame you?  You look adorable in a cardigan!

We knew from the very beginning that you would be such a good big sister to your baby brother. Grandma Carrot & I refer to you as "Mama 2." It's cool though because I carried that same title when it comes to my sister and she's 32.  Bubbas loves you so much.  I know he can be a real pain when he comes in your room at 6am on Saturday to wake you up but it's because he loves you so much and cannot wait to play.  I love that you call him "Sweetie" or "Baby" when you talk to him.  Thank you for being patient with him and including him when you play.  One day, you will be both be so busy with your own friends and activities that I will miss hearing you two play in living room while I make dinner.  I won't necessarily miss the wrestling and gymnastics that you do on the couch but I will miss that laughter.
When it comes to toys, you are all about the Barbies.  Lately, you have gotten into the Girl Super Heros too.  When I ask you about all of your My Little Ponies, you emphatically say, "I'm tired of ponies." Every once in a while, I will see you playing with them in the basement but I know your true love right now is everything Barbie.  It's so fun to watch or more so listen to you while you play.  Your imagination is amazing!  I should really write down half of the scenes that you act out and write a book.  No doubt that it would be a best seller.  If you are not playing with the Barbies, you are playing dress up.  Somehow you always end up casting yourself as some sort of Queen or Princess with a great backstory.  I can't wait for the day that you can act in a real play!
The past few months, we have spent a lot of time talking about Kindergarten and getting you ready for your transition to a new school.  You have always had such genuine excitement about going to St. Michael's.  I secretly love it every time when you say, "St. Michael's" as opposed to "St. Mike's."  I don't know why but it makes me smile.  This past week you have embraced all the new routines of wearing a uniform, school drop-off, packing a lunch, school rules and after school program.  Overall, I think you have done really well with this big transition.

Eloise, my wish for you this next year is that it is filled with lots of love, friendship, excitement, learning and happiness.  I never knew I could love someone as much as I love you. Happy 5th Birthday to my smart, funny, cat-loving, donut-eating, rap song singing, headband-wearing, feisty, beautiful girl.

Love you to the moon & back,

Mommy

Celebrating Preston!

Preston loves all things Mickey right now so it only seemed fitting to do a Mickey Mouse birthday party this year.  In keeping with the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme, we did a Hot Dog, Hot Dog, Hot Diggity Dog-themed menu.  Preston loves his hot dogs too so it was a hit.
This was Brad's one contribution to the party decor:
Auntie Lo made her signature cake balls & special chocolate-covered pretzels.
A rare moment where the birthday boy was sitting still...
Just 2 bros, eating chips & talking about life

Happy 2nd Birthday Preston

Dear Preston,
Oh sweet Bubbas, how we love you. You are a real handful at times and have taught us so much this year about patience, humor, love, flexibility & the differences between boys & girls. I do not care what people say - every kid is different and boys & girls are different. We thought we had this 2 kid thing down to science and then you became a rambunctious toddler. This past year you have had more bruises, bumps & ouchies than Eloise has had in 4.5 years. While you are such as bruiser most of the time, you really are a lover. You are a hugger and a big juicy kisser. I hope you always pucker up those big lips and give me kisses when I see you. You are the ultimate thief when it comes to iPhones, Barbies, Chapstick, water bottles, snacks & headbands. It's funny every time that you put on one of Eloise's headbands!

Besides all the obvious physical changes with turning 2, one of the biggest changes is your hair! You went from a big bald head on your 1st birthday to a head full of curls today.  I die with those curls! I can't get enough of them. I just want to scrunch them with a little product so they stay perfect all day. Don't even get me started with those deep brown eyes that light up the room. I'm pretty sure that you are left handed as I've seen you color or throw a ball with some real power with that left hand. Only time will tell! I know you're destined for greatness since your a mini version of your Daddy but some people have told me that many Presidents are left-handed. No pressure Bubba Chubbas, Mommy will love you whatever you do.

One of the best parts of this age is your ability to communicate more. Since 18 months, you have started talking more & more. Granted, sometimes I think you are half dinosaur because you love to growl & roar. You pretty much all the classic animal noises for zoo & barn animals  or anything that can growl. When it doubt, growl it out!  I swear, every week that goes by you are learning a few new words and stringing together little toddler sentences.  Every once in a while, I can get to you count to five too.  Eloise loves to make requests for you say all sorts of words or answer her off the wall questions.  Since you were in my belly, I wondered what you would call Eloise when you started to talk. You ended up with, "Sheesh!" The more I thought about where that came from, I realized that we often say to you, "Go show Eloise or go sit by Eloise or go play with Eloise... SHE'S over there." We think that's where you got the "Sheesh" from.  We love it and I think Eloise loves it too. There is truly no greater joy than watching you & Eloise. You love each other so much. I love that even at school when both of you can play with any one of your friends on the playground that you often decide to play with each other. It makes my mama heart so happy. You try so hard to keep up with her and be her little sidekick. It's precious to see you try to play Barbies with her or try to jump & dance like her. I know you will not always be like this with each other so I cherish these moments.

You are a fierce little bruiser with a personality just as big as your sister's.  When people warned us that boys can be so much for physical than girls, I do not think that I fully appreciated that warning.  Mama never knew how much blood went along with a bloody nose or what one does to stop it but I know now!  Well I love that you can shake off a stumble or an ouchie pretty quickly, I don't think I was prepared for the number of gray hairs I would acquire this year watching you jump and run every where we go.  I know that this next year will keep us busy and on our toes as your latest thirst for adventure does not seem to be waning.  So, here's to the adventure that lies ahead with a 2 year old Preston Bradley Kalins!

Happy Birthday Preston!

Love,

Mommy

Preston: 18 month update & Thanksgiving Fun

Happy 18 months Preston Bradley!
Here we are at another milestone age.  At your 18th month appointment, you weighed in around 30lbs and 32.28 inches long.  When it was time for those dreaded shots, the nurse commented on how strong you were.  Good thing Mommy has been trained to restrain unruly patients because those skills come in handy when the nurse asks me to hold you still.  Kidding...not kidding.

You are all Toddler Boy, all day!  Every 5 seconds, we hear, "No!" or "Mine!"  You are trying to figure out how to communicate with us more and more every day.  You do a lot of pointing and saying, "Dis...Dat...Dis." You officially moved up to the Young Toddler room earlier this month and you were more ready!  Now that you are playing with other kids your age and a little older, I can only expect your vocabulary to expand greatly.
It was a hard transition to leave Ms. Tee who was his teacher since he was 12 weeks old.  He loves her so!  Last winter when Preston was battling ear ache after ear ache, Ms. Tee would hold him many days during his entire nap to give him some extra TLC. Every day since he left her room, he will walk past the door and stop to give her a kiss.  Ms. Tee will always hold a special place in our hearts for the way that she loved on Preston.
There's a good chance that Preston is going to left-handed.  I have noticed on more than one occasion that he prefers to color and paint with his left hand.  You know who else is left-handed?  Professional athletes & Presidents.  Just sayin'...
This picture is a perfect example of the dynamic between Eloise & Preston.  He literally just wants to do everything that she does.

As part of a project that the whole daycare was participating in, the kids each had to decorate a puzzle piece that reflected their personality and the things they loved.  Here were the final products:
We started a Thanksgiving celebrations a little early this year.  We had some of beloved family in from California so we decided to do a proper Thanksgiving during their time here.  We used all of Great Grandma Fitz's recipes for the meal.  She happily watched over the final preparations.
Auntie Lo, cousin Emily and Eloise made custom Thanksgiving vests & headdresses for everyone.  Eloise loves to pick out her clothes every day and often walks down our stairs saying, "Mommy! Look at me!  I look so fashion!"
 3 Indian Princesses
Preston is still smitten with Aunt Patti.
He was playing doctor here and giving her a checkup.
Of note, Eloise is not getting a new pet.  A girl can dream!
